Yesterday (2019)

Country: GB/CHI/JAP/US
Technical: col/2.39:1. 116m
Director: Danny Boyle
Cast: Himesh Patel, Lily James, Joel Fry, Sophia Di Martino, Ed Sheeran

Synopsis:

After being knocked over by a bus, a no-hoper Suffolk singer-songwriter comes to in a world that has never heard of The Beatles (and one or two other things). His success with their songs draws him to the flame of international adulation and away from the girl who believed in him all along.

Review:

Beguiling piece of whimsy which actually gets away with not explaining (or reversing) its peculiar premise, and succeeds in being modestly engaging for the bulk of its running time. However, given the potential on offer, the music is strangely disappointing and the central relationship is the slenderest of plot threads with which to sustain a movie of this length, whose wisdom amounts to: 'Tell the girl you love how you feel'.
