Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988)

£0.00

(Mujeres al borde de una ataca de nervios)

Country: SP
Technical: col 89m
Director: Pedro Almodóvar
Cast: Carmen Maura, Antonio Banderas, Julieta Serrano

Synopsis:

A dubbing actress desperately tries to contact her lover but discovers he is going away to Stockholm with another woman. Meanwhile her friend is in dread of the police because she has been seeing one of a group of Shiite terrorists who are planning to bomb the same flight.

Review:

At first sight this is one of those Boulevard style sex comedies (the apartment is like a single set where much of the action takes place), but it is actually every bit as much a homage to Sirk and Hitchcock, a film totally identified with the state of being of its lead character, Pepa. Her resilience and resourcefulness are lionised by the director, as is by association Maura herself (it was their last film with her as the lead). At any rate it is beautifully played, framed and scored, and thrust its director onto the international stage.
