Winter's Bone (2010)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 100m
Director: Debra Granik
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Valerie Richards, John Hawkes

Synopsis:

In the Ozark mountains of Alabama a seventeen year-old girl looks after her two younger siblings and catatonic mother with the slenderest of resources. When her father fails to respond to a court summons she learns that the property in which they live is bonded and that unless she can turn up her errant smack dealer parent they will lose everything.

Review:

Poverty line drama peopled by the kind of characters one is accustomed to seeing in the subgenre of backwoods horror, but who are by turns violently hostile and obliging in aiding the young Ree in her apparently hopeless search for her outlaw-turned-stool pigeon dad. The significance of the film's title becomes clear in a grim marsh-set climax worthy of Tobe Hooper, but much of the time we observe the courageous and dignified surrogate mum in her arduous existence among bare trees and marginalised communities.
