Country: TUR/GER/FR
Technical: col/2.35:1 196m
Director: Nuri Bilge Ceylan
Cast: Haluk Bilginer, Melisa Sözen, Demet Akbag

Synopsis:

The different threads of a retired actor's life reach crisis point, as he spends winter in his hotel in Anatolia: his status as landlord to impoverished locals, his self-indulgent practice of writing leading articles for a local paper, and the flawed relationship he has with his much younger wife, who takes part in charitable initiatives to assert her autonomy.

Review:

The director again turns his scrutiny on a marriage (cf. Climates), but there is a concern also for moral and political hypocrisy. Aydin is a basically decent, gentle man, but with a tendency to be sanctimonious; he slothfully puts off his main task of writing a book on theatre to concern himself with the imperfections of society around him, and he neglects both his wife and his tenants. However, as the film closes, he seems ready to try again, and his wife's idealism has been dealt a cruel blow by someone other than himself: nothing is straightforward but we are left with a note of optimism. The film-making is deliberate, poetic and very beautiful to look at, even a scene between the protagonist and his sister is full of mismatched edits.
