From the promise of two earlier screenplays comes this corker of a modern Western, whose total mastery of its locations comes accompanied by a scenario in which action takes second place to character and social context. Renner demonstrates that he should long ago have taken up chaps and stetson, so becoming are his chiselled features and acting style to the genre. It is a story of how outsiders can be brutalised by the environment in which they find themselves, while also being a tribute to the neglect suffered by a whole community, and others like it. The violence, when it comes, is as uncompromising as the Wyoming landscape.
