Wild (2014)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 115m
Director: Jean-Marc Vallée
Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Thomas Sadoski

Synopsis:

A young woman eaten up with grief and anger over her mother's untimely death takes a hard right away from her self-destructive path in order to attempt the Pacific Coastal Trail from the Mojave Desert to Portland Oregon.

Review:

A profoundly moving film about the author's journey of self-discovery, and yet there is no epiphany as such; instead the director and editor adopt a discursive, allusive style to approximate the manner in which thoughts occur and memories revive when you are alone with yourself. It has the double virtue of also shading in the backstory of this ill-prepared novice who somehow becomes something of a folk heroine for the other hikers through her gnomic quotations in the trail books along the way. Danger for a lone female hiker is never far but steers clear of generic stereotypes, and though the full spectrum of the kindness or otherwise of strangers is represented here, it is a child's disarming innocence that causes her to crack.
