Whom the Gods Wish to Destroy (1966/67)
(Die Nibelungen, Teil 1: Siegfried; Teil 2: Kriemhilds Rache)
Country: GER/YUG
Technical: Eastmancolor/Ultrascope 110m
Director: Harald Reinl
Cast: Karin Dor, Uwe Beyer, Rolf Henniger, Terence Hill
Synopsis:
Siegfried slays the dragon, takes possession of the ring of the Nibelung and sails to Iceland where he frees Brunhild. In Part 2 Kriemhild marries a nomadic hun in an elaborate scheme to be revenged on Hagen.
Review:
Essentially a remake of Lang's two-part silent epic, this was a considerable production for such a 'niche' property in the mid-sixties. It is all a bit heavy-going, particularly in the second half, with the revenge served cold.
