Where the Truth Lies (2005)

£0.00

Country: CAN/GB
Technical: DeLuxe/scope 107m
Director: Atom Egoyan
Cast: Kevin Bacon, Colin Firth, Alison Lohman, David Hayman

Synopsis:

A journalist whose life was forever changed by a now defunct fifties singing double act is given the assignment of collating the memoirs of one half for her magazine. However, a chance meeting with the other member of the duo leads to complications, as well as demystifying her fan's eye view of their sexuality and the truth surrounding the death of a waitress in their hotel suite.

Review:

The themes of childhood and multiple perspective narratives recur in this, Egoyan's most commercial work to date. Stylistically it shares the lavish colours and polished camerawork of such as Erotica and Ararat but does not quite convince that it feels as much as those films did: the tormented characters are held at arm's length, and the journalist protagonist remains a cipher. That said, it is compelling, erotic entertainment which successfully evokes an era of television and gangster-sponsored talent.
