Where Angels Fear to Tread (1991)
Country: GB
Technical: Eastmancolor 108m
Director: Charles Sturridge
Cast: Helen Mirren, Rupert Graves, Helena Bonham Carter, Judy Davis, Giovanni Guidelli
Synopsis:
A widowed socialite travels to Italy and makes a love match with a young Tuscan that scandalizes her in-laws in Edwardian England.
Review:
Inevitably the visualization of Forster's novels moved to the minor works when the others were used up - and recruited some of the acting talent of previous successes. This second look at what Italy does to the English has to its credit a surprise death in the first half, but the bizarrely wrong-headed Herriton family and inscrutable Miss Abbott (unlike their counterparts in Howard's End) do not yield enough coherent drama to sustain involvement.
