When Marnie Was There (2014)

(Omoide no Mânî)

Country: JAP
Technical: col 103m
Director: Hiromasa Yonebayashi
Cast: animated

Synopsis:

An isolated and resentful girl is sent by her foster parents to spend the summer at the coast with relatives, and there befriends the spirit of a young girl who used to live in the mansion overlooking the bay.

Review:

Wholly suited to the Japanese ghost tradition, this transposition of a successful children's book works a treat in all respects. Once again Studio Ghibli's animation, after a momentary adjustment, impresses through its fluid movement, attractive settings and attention to facial detail, in spite of the stylisation of features along western lines. There is also something grown up about this tale of a potent childhood bond between girls.
