Water Lilies (2007)

(Naissance de pieuvres)

Country: FR
Technical: col 85m
Director: Céline Sciamma
Cast: Pauline Acquart, Louise Blachère, Adèle Haenel

Synopsis:

Friends of 14 or 15 in a leafy Paris banlieue fall for twin objects of desire: for dumpy Anne it is one of the alpha-male swimmers at the local pool; for our protagonist Marie it is his target conquest, Floriane, leader of the synchronised swimming team and one of those attractive fifteen year-olds determined to lose her virginity, but merely securing herself a reputation as a tramp in the process. Coldly indifferent to Marie's interest, the friendless Floriane at first exploits her, before seeing her as one with whom she might at last be ready to make the step into adulthood.

Review:

A heartbreakingly honest look at how rocky can be the process of self-actualisation for a young girl in these freed up times, as difficult for the attractive Floriane as for the puddingy Anne. Only Marie seems to know what it is she wants and proceeds by determined steps, and all but similar self-abasement, to get it. When she finally does, one is left with a sense of disappointment rare in more romantic, male-directed, treatments.
