The Worst Person in the World (2021)

(Verdens verste menneske)

Country: NOR/FR/SV/DK
Technical: col 128m
Director: Joachim Trier
Cast: Renate Reinsve, Anders Danielsen Lie, Herbert Nordrum

Synopsis:

A talented student cannot stick to one course of study for long, and finds it equally hard to stay with the same man. Her restlessness betrays a lack of self-belief together with a reluctance to be pigeonholed. Life's opportunities come and go, irretrievably, but she finds her niche.

Review:

Third in the director's loosely termed 'Oslo trilogy', this bravely adopts a female protagonist and makes her selfish and destructive; however, it would be facile to take the title literally: she is impossible but hardly malicious. In the film's most arresting sequence she runs across town to try out her new boyfriend, while time and the city stand still: it almost unbalances the film, which is constructed around twelve chapters, some more substantial than others. Nevertheless, the film articulates something about the 'more is less' quandary of limitless and instantaneous possibility that today's generation has to contend with.
