The Woman with the Knife (1969)

(La femme au couteau)

Country: IVOR
Technical: bw 80m
Director: Timité Bassori
Cast: Timité Bassori, Danielle Aloh, Mary Vieyra

Synopsis:

A young intellectual experiences a vision of a woman with a knife which haunts any feelings of love he feels for women. The friend whose advice he seeks remembers a story of a man from his youth who after spending time in France was similarly unable to adapt to Ivorian society and imagined he was in love with a woman who first visited him while he slept.

Review:

Bassori's confusing text (because the same actor appears to play both roles, and because it is lacking in any formal transitions between the different stories) is nevertheless a highly respected work from the fledgling film industry. True, the editing and line readings are crude, but the cinematography is polished enough. The reviews of the film which emphasise the theme of emancipation from French hegemonic influence are erroneous, as the key to the mystery in fact resides in a native childhood memory.
