The Witch (2015)

(The VVitch: A New-England Folktale)

Country: US/GB/CAN
Technical: col/1.66:1 92m
Director: Robert Eggers
Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie

Synopsis:

A family of New England puritans is banished from the security of the plantation for its hardline practices, and occupies land adjacent to the forest wilderness where it is plagued by paranormal phenomena and witchcraft.

Review:

Haunting and increasingly chilling drama, written in 16th century English and based on testimony and journals from the time. Rather in the manner of Under the Skin, it includes glimpses of the unexplained as vignettes shorn of context, until the final ecstatic revelation. Taylor-Joy is excellent as the innocent, but eminently corruptible, nymphet and the images remain with you for a long time, though it is very dark!
