The Wicked Lady (1945)
Country: GB
Technical: bw 104m
Director: Leslie Arliss
Cast: Margaret Lockwood, James Mason, Patricia Roc
Synopsis:
A bored noblewoman throws caution to the winds and enters into a business liaison with a highwayman.
Review:
Gainsborough's famous set of costume melodramas was epitomized by this bodice-ripper, in which Mason's salacious savouring of his lines and Lockwood's eye-popping décolletage drew sharp intakes of breath on the other side of the Atlantic. How it all got past the normally vigilant national board of censors is a mystery. Total kitsch, of course, but deliciously so, unlike Winner's remake which removed the bodices, and all the fun.
