The World Unseen (2007)
Country: SA/GB
Technical: col 94m
Director: Shamim Sarif
Cast: Lisa Ray, Sheetal Sheth, Parvin Dabas
Synopsis:
In 1952, an Asian wife and mother has her ideas changed when she meets a free-thinking, anti-Apartheid café owner of mixed race origins.
Review:
A touching lesbian love story, played with great sensitivity by the leads, this period piece is ultimately too pretty - like its four key female cast members - and too toned-down in its sex and violence to wholly convince. The highly resolved colour and lachrymose score do little to dispel the impression of a Sunday teatime television drama, though it is equally hard to object to its impeccable professionalism.
