The Wind and the Lion (1975)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 119m
Director: John Milius
Cast: Sean Connery, Candice Bergen, Brian Keith

Synopsis:

When an American woman is abducted by Berber tribesmen in Morocco, President Theodore Roosevelt takes a personal interest, particularly in besting his opponent, the Raisuli. Meanwhile a relationship of mutual respect develops between captor and captive.

Review:

A lavish and magnificent adventure movie of the kind they didn't make any more, this is also a massive indulgence by creator Milius of all his fantasies and predilections, from the shots of surf to the celebration of individualist action. Something of a Roosevelt figure himself, he even permits himself a homage to The Wild Bunch, as Bergen leads the soldiers to free Connery, with Goldsmith conniving on the soundtrack. Elsewhere they both too indulge in gestures towards that giant of West-meets-Islam films: Lawrence of Arabia.
