The War Zone (1998)

Country: GB/IT
Technical: col/scope 99m
Director: Tim Roth
Cast: Ray Winstone, Lara Belmont, Freddie Cunliffe

Synopsis:

Tom is an average mixed-up adolescent stuck with his family in rainswept Devon when he discovers that his father and his sister are conducting an incestuous relationship.

Review:

...Against the will of his sister, though this is not the way he sees it, and the film attempts to chart how the already curious young man becomes sexually confused to the point where it is suggested he might ultimately take his father's place. Unfortunately the actor's one-note performance is a drain on our empathy and the film's dramatic parricidal dénouement does not carry the power of some of the earlier scenes: continentally slow takes of dismal coastline, brave handling of difficult material in the manner of The Cement Garden, but an ending which leaves too many questions unanswered.
