The Wages of Fear (1953)

£0.00

(Le salaire de la peur)

Country: FR/IT
Technical: bw 140m
Director: Henri-Georges Clouzot
Cast: Yves Montand, Charles Vanel, Vera Clouzot, Peter van Eyck

Synopsis:

An assortment of expat workers and adventurers stuck in a remote Venezuelan town seize the chance of a ticket home when the local American oil company advertises for drivers to take two truckloads of nitro-glycerine to a burning well.

Review:

Taking the time first to set up its characters, before showing how the drive together changes them, Clouzot's classic suspenser is a nail-bitingly tense and exhausting endurance test for its audience as well. As in other of its director's films one has the impression of watching unsympathetic specimens writhe in their own filth, like the insects in the opening shot. Filmed in the South of France, the production uses - and dresses - its locations well, and provided a template for later movies such as Hell Drivers and Speed.
