A Woman Under the Influence (1974)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 155m
Director: John Cassavetes
Cast: Gena Rowlands, Peter Falk

Synopsis:

A city construction worker has trouble with his stay-at-home wife, whose lunatic antics threaten to destabilise their loving relationship.

Review:

This typically visceral, though injuriously overlong, marital drama from Cassavetes showcases the considerable acting talents of his wife, Rowlands, who sustains the scrutiny of the camera brilliantly for much of the time. While undeniably eccentric in her demonstrative manner, Mabel is in fact as harmless as a kitten, and her crises occur when she is either taken advantage of or expected to adhere too rigidly to expected norms of behaviour. At times one feels it is Nick (Falk) who is more to blame, resulting in two set-piece scenes which are all but unbearable to watch. The film starts and ends arbitrarily 'in medias res', which works quite well, given the intractable problem of mental ill health.
