Voyage to Italy (1953)

£0.00

(Viaggio in Italia)

Country: IT/FR
Technical: bw 100m
Director: Roberto Rossellini
Cast: Ingrid Bergman, George Sanders, Maria Mauban

Synopsis:

An English couple travel to Naples to tie up the affairs of a deceased uncle, and alone for the first time since their marriage they are brought face to face with their mutual indifference.

Review:

The brittle exchanges between spouses prior to their agreed separation to see the sights say it all, and they come back together more or less decided on divorce, though the wife continues to hope for a kind word and a way of saving the marriage. How one then takes the miraculous conversion at the film's climax will depend much on one's religious sense, though Rossellini does sow the seeds early on with his intimations of mortality and hints that what the couple need is a child to distract them from their misery! A mixed success, then, but full of moments of truth and now a beautiful record of this part of Italy before mass tourism.
