Violent Cop (1989)

£0.00

(Sono Otkok Kyobo ni Tsuki)

Country: JAP
Technical: col 103m
Director: Takeshi Kitano
Cast: 'Beat' Takeshi, Maiko Kawakami, Makoto Ashigawa

Synopsis:

A policeman who impassively beats on his suspects divides his time between his mentally unbalanced sister and rookie partner, but the former turns into a promiscuous junkie and the latter becomes the next source of laundered dope for the local drug baron.

Review:

In his directorial debut Kitano puts his own spin on the classic maverick cop storyline: violent, yes, but without the dynamics of the mainstream version. Thus shots are held so long as to sap forward narrative momentum, characters are so laconic that their moral standpoint can only be discerned by their actions, and even these seem at times to outweigh any possible gain. It is a new acting style where is less is, well, the point: the only consolations offered by the modern world are a view of the sea (which is too far) or a descent into drugs.
