(Escape to Victory)

Country: US/GB/IT
Technical: col/scope 116m
Director: John Huston
Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine, Pelé, Max Von Sydow, Bobby Moore

Synopsis:

A particularly talented bunch of POWs are challenged by the German national team to a contest in Nazi-occupied Paris, while the Resistance and British top brass organize an escape for the team after the match.

Review:

A bit late in the day for an escape movie, and even odder as a choice for the aged director with limited time at his disposal, this seems to have been conceived as an elaborate caper for soccer stars to appear in a movie alongside movie stars. One thinks irresistibly of the Von Trapp singers, and also of Shostakovich's 5th Symphony when composer Bill Conti gets going on his triumphant finale.
