Country: SP
Technical: col 92m
Director: Julio Medem
Cast: Emma Suárez, Carmelo Gómez, Ana Torrent

Synopsis:

In the Basque region for three generations, two families are locked in rivalry over resentment going back to the Carlist war of 1875. This plays out against the background of the Basque wood-chopping contests, and romantic intrigues between the offspring, all of which passes under the silent gaze of the region's cows.

Review:

Medem's first feature, earning him the Goya prize, immediately set him apart with its allusive, magic realist language and use of concentric narrative circles, a technique which would later inform Lucía y el sexo and Los amantes del círculo polar. Rather than portraying his native region as an oppressed minority culture, he depicts a society that constantly seeks to escape itself while being inexorably drawn back into internecine conflict. The same actors play the successive generational participants of the story, which can be confusing.
