The Virgin and the Gypsy (1970)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col 95m
Director: Christopher Miles
Cast: Joanna Shimkus, Franco Nero, Honor Blackman

Synopsis:

A girl's sexual awakening coincides with one of the River Severn's seasonal mood swings.

Review:

Lawrence's novella is given a quietly erotic treatment contemporary with Russell's contrastingly tempestuous Women in Love. The cultural stereotypes are well upholstered thanks to good acting but it is all just a bit inconsequential and the author's metaphors of gypsies and floods seem overstated now. Reportedly Nero's body odour caused Shimkus no end of discomfort in the bedroom scene.
