Les voleurs (1996)

£0.00

(Thieves)

Country: FR
Technical: col 116m
Director: André Téchiné
Cast: Daniel Auteuil, Catherine Deneuve, Laurence Côte, Didier Bezace

Synopsis:

The leader of a gang of car thieves is shot dead during a heist, and his son and brother look back on the months leading up to his death and reflect on their different relationships with the deceased.

Review:

As in J'Embrasse pas the director surveys at length a group of more or less desperate individuals, but declines to pass judgement. The policeman here is helped by the first-person narrator approach: so deep-rooted is the French distaste for the profession, he would otherwise quickly lose our sympathy. The film seems to be showing how crime and family relationships are interlinked, but also spends some time on the sapphic obsession on the part of a faculty professor for one of the band, who is involved with the cop. These elements, together with the curious, precocious, incipiently criminal child, make for an amorphous whole.
