Country: US
Technical: col/scope 131m
Director: Clint Eastwood
Cast: Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, Richard Harris

Synopsis:

Wyoming, 1880: when the sheriff of a small town declines to punish adequately the cowboy who has cut up one of the girls at the local whorehouse, the madam rustles up the money to put out a bounty on his head, and that of his companion. There follows a war of wills between the sheriff, and those fancying their chances to collect. Ultimately, it is up to a hog farmer, who has renounced violence and the bottle, to restore respect for human decency in the community, while paradoxically visiting hell upon it.

Review:

Eastwood's Western swansong eschews for the most part the rumbustious humour of his Leone-influenced films, and opts for a poetry and humanity rarely seen. The sheriff's weakness for DIY and espousal of the writer's talents for publicising, and embellishing, the exploits of the era, remind one of Mapache's fondness for new technology in The Wild Bunch: quirkily humanising details that make a villainous character more interesting and put the changing times into focus. But it is the film's attitude to killing that is most significant, and ambiguous! A great movie.
