Undine (2020)

£0.00

Country: GER/FR
Technical: col 91m
Director: Christian Petzold
Cast: Paula Beer, Franz Rogowski, Jacob Matschenz

Synopsis:

A historian working at Berlin's museum of architecture is jilted by her boyfriend and vows to kill him, but is distracted by her impromptu meeting with a diver who repairs underwater parts at hydroelectric dams.

Review:

Toying, in its leading character's name and plot details, with the myth of the little mermaid, Petzold again teams Beer and Rogowski to explore the nature of love and its links to place: the station platform, the triangular cafe terrace, the apartment with its view of the city, and others, all have more or less meaning according to the state of mind of Undine. Repeated use of a Bach sonata slow movement underlines the mood of melancholy throughout. A finely calibrated, satisfyingly concise film which confirms Beer as one of the notable actresses of her generation.
