A stunning film for its time, Fuller's bleak revenge fable, with Robertson ending up face down in the alley where we first found him, is typically strong meat: the director juxtaposes a hit-and-run involving a child with his hero pulling a brace of plucked poultry out of a bag, dead meat with a range of symbolic values.
