The Unforgiven (1960)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 125m
Director: John Huston
Cast: Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn, Audie Murphy

Synopsis:

A family of white homesteaders takes in a Kiowa orphan, with tragic results.

Review:

After the 'good Indian' westerns (Broken Arrow etc.) the next step was the 'guilty conscience' western. Here the Indian is not the hero, is barely a presence, but the whiteman is not allowed to forget past wrongs. And at the end, when the Indians are slaughtered for the second time, the orphan girl kills her own brother for love of a paleface. The final shot of swirling dust is hauntingly pessimistic.
