The Underneath (1995)

Country: US
Technical: col 100m
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Cast: Peter Gallagher, Alison Elliott, William Fichtner, Joe Don Baker, Elisabeth Shue

Synopsis:

An inveterate gambler returns to Austin for his mother's remarriage, after having left his wife and debts two years before; he gets a job as security guard and tries to lure his ex from the clutches of a semi-underworld bar owner by setting up a robbery from the inside.

Review:

Rather as in Out of Sight and The Limey, the director deconstructs his tale into past, present and future components, increasing suspense as to the outcome of the heist but also one's exasperation with the shiftless lead character, despite a superb shot from Gallagher at making him sympathetic. It is an elegant entertainment, but one whose closing minutes leave rather too many questions unanswered.
