Two Brothers (2004)

(Deux frères)

Country: FR/GB
Technical: col/2.35:1 109m
Director: Jean-Jacques Annaud
Cast: Guy Pearce, Jean-Claude Dreyfus, Freddie Highmore

Synopsis:

In Mekong province, South-East Asia, between the wars, a hunter/writer turned plunderer of Buddhist artefacts rescues one of two orphaned tiger cubs, but loses it on his arrest; the other is later found during a hunt and passes to the administrator's son. Growing up apart, the two animals end up respectively in a circus and the native prince's private zoo.

Review:

Once again the director excels in setting himself the fiercest of film-making challenges. The result is a delightful tale for children in which the animal kingdom is granted a reprieve but the moral concerning Man's mistreatment of creation made clear enough. The animal sequences are remarkable for their staging, beauty and the matching of location and studio sequences.
