To Have and Have Not (1944)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 100m
Director: Howard Hawks
Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Walter Brennan

Synopsis:

A whisky-running boat owner offers to transport a Free French couple to Martinique during WW2.

Review:

Celebrated as the film which brought together Bogie and Bacall, and the chemistry is there, but this is also a fine example of Hawks's hard-bitten-soft-centred film-making. The Brennan 'rummie' character reappeared in Rio Bravo, played by Dean Martin. It's an ensemble piece, as the Hoagy Carmichael songs attest; the action is just put in to remind us of story every now and then.
