Synopsis:
Three stories on a train from Trieste to Rome: a professor travelling to rejoin his family fantasises about the personal assistant from whose kindness he has benefited; a general's widow harangues her community service-serving paid companion; three Celtic supporters on their way to the big game become embroiled with the problems of a family of Albanian immigrants.
Review:
Olmi's tale of the professor is perhaps the most understated and sensuous of the episodes of this triptych, interrupted by mysterious recollections from his childhood (?) of a girl seated at a piano. The rest is also very good, though the first two segments suffer from a certain lack of closure due to the contiguous nature of the whole journey with certain characters appearing in each.
