Ryan's Daughter (1971)

Country: GB
Technical: col/scope70 206m
Director: David Lean
Cast: Sarah Miles, Robert Mitchum, Chris Jones, John Mills, Trevor Howard, Leo McKern

Synopsis:

A schoolteacher in southern Ireland marries a publican's daughter smitten with Bovarisme, and soon enough she strays with a British officer.

Review:

Another of the director's grand canvases, only this time the story is not made to measure. The result is that the characters are dwarfed by the mise en scène: we never get to know Rose enough to judge whether she is a victim of tragic circumstance or just a spoilt tramp, and Jones's traumatised English officer must get by on enigmatic looks. Meanwhile Lean punctuates their scenes with shots of flowers and seagulls, and underlines the narrative pairings: the Major and Michael the village idiot as lame would-be suitors to Rose; the latter identified with the fleeing O'Leary, brought down by the Major's .303, just as she is mock-kissed and stripped by the villagers. All the while, one senses Lean's frustration that he did not have Christie and O'Toole in the lead roles.
