Russian Dolls (2005)

(Les poupées russes)

Country: FR/GB
Technical: col 129m
Director: Cédric Klapisch
Cast: Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou, Cécile de France, Kelly Reilly, Kevin Bishop

Synopsis:

The feckless, self-regarding hero of Pot Luck is a writer trying to get work in Paris five years later. He gets through the female cast like a dose of salts and finally opts for the English girl from the first film, whose brother is now marrying a Russian ballerina.

Review:

Punctuated by the same heavy-handedly self-mocking surreal touches as its predecessor, and basking in the felicitous symmetry of its French title, this overstretched rom com à la française is not helped by the increased exposure of its lead in the interim. Callow youth now just comes over as weak-willed lothario, all the more undeserving of the array of female pulchritude that is called upon to fall at his feet. There are moments of delight, mostly around Kelly Reilly, but it is a long haul and leaves loose ends hanging even after two interwoven hours.
