Roxanne (1987)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 107m
Director: Fred Schepisi
Cast: Steve Martin, Daryl Hannah, Rick Rossovich
Synopsis:
Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac (q.v.) is transposed to the contemporary northwest: the hero is a fireman and there is no familial connection with the adored Roxanne.
Review:
Pretty successful updating of a classic, with necessary coarsening of the original verse's wit and poetry but undeniable energy and inventiveness. The small town setting is a major asset in providing the usual types and an alibi for the naïvety of the whole scenario, and Martin's deft performance is one of his best.
