Rope (1948)
Country: US
Technical: col 80m
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Cast: James Stewart, John Dall, Farley Granger
Synopsis:
Homosexual lovers murder a friend and hide his body in a chest, upon which they serve dinner to friends and family, including their college professor, an expert in forensic science.
Review:
A play is transposed fluidly to the screen thanks to use of the ten-minute take and the device of cutting behind people's backs and pieces of furniture. The implications for mise-en-scène are mind-boggling and deftly negotiated, but the accomplishment brings few boons in dramatic terms and the leads are wooden by 1948 standards.
