Roger Dodger (2002)
Country: US
Technical: Technicolor 106m
Director: Dylan Kidd
Cast: Campbell Scott, Jesse Eisenberg, Jennifer Beals, Elizabeth Berkley, Isabella Rossellini
Synopsis:
Columbia undergraduate Nick goes awol in New York City and pays a visit on his lothario uncle Roger for a few tips in the ladies' department. There follows a long night of mutual discovery, from which Nick emerges one step ahead of his mates, if no less a virgin, and Roger simultaneously loses his job and is made to realize his limited shelf life in the sex department.
Review:
Familiar but well written comedy drama which juggles the competing attractions of almost spot-on but too cynical realism and honest naïvety. Filmed with a persuasively dogme-style immediacy and acted a storm by Scott, it suffers slightly from developing its characters too little before the under-explained coda. Nevertheless this is smart adult entertainment.
