Rocketman (2019)
Country: GB/US/CAN
Technical: col/2.39:1 121m
Director: Dexter Fletcher
Cast: Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, Bryce Dallas Howard, Steven Mackintosh
Synopsis:
The childhood, early breakthrough and battle with his sense of self of a unique rock/blues artist of the glam pop era.
Review:
Courting a fantasia style of which Ken Russell would have been proud, but never quite did so well, Fletcher continued his penchant for biopics with this 'laugh out loud-cry on the inside' portrayal of Elton John's gleefully unpretentious rise to fame and self-destructive tail spin. Most of the famous tunes are there, but song recreations are eschewed in favour of poignant scenes with family members and lifelong friend, Taupin. A fictional AA meeting provides useful structure and ballast.
