Rocco and his Brothers (1960)

£0.00

(Rocco e i suoi fratelli)

Country: IT/FR
Technical: bw/1.85:1 177m
Director: Luchino Visconti
Cast: Alain Delon, Renato Salvatori, Annie Girardot, Katina Paxinou

Synopsis:

A mother takes her five sons out of agricultural labour in Sicily to Milan, where they can make better lives for themselves. However, the second son's successful boxing career leads to unhappiness, jealousy and murder.

Review:

Visconti returns to his neo-realist beginnings with this Zola-esque saga, the film dividing itself into segments named after the sons, but which do not exclusively concern themselves with each one in turn. Poverty and indignity are never far off the screen, and some of the scenes are quite strong for the time. Along with Pasolini's Accatone, Antononi's La Notte and Fellini's La Dolce Vita, it shows Italy's urban regeneration in a less than flattering light, and features some strong acting from the leads, particularly Girardot, whose finest hour this was.
