Synopsis:
Returning from the Crusades with Coeur de Lion, a commoner assumes the identity of the nobleman Robert Loxley and helps defend his lands, and the kingdom itself, against the predations of the turncoat Godfrey, who has hoodwinked weak King John and opened the back door to an invading French force.
Review:
This merrie piece of history all but bites off more than it can chew but has great fun along the way, even making Robin the architect of Magna Carta! Not much of it is remotely historical, of course, but in leaving out all the Sherwood stuff until the end it effectively revises Robin Hoods past and may leave some feeling short-changed. As if to allay any such feelings, we have an action climax which merges that of Elizabeth: the Golden Age with the opening of Saving Private Ryan, but Scott shows himself as adept at marshalling this sort of thing for the big screen as ever, and even the music seems to cry out memories of Gladiator.
