Road to Perdition (2002)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: Technicolor/Super 35 117m
Director: Sam Mendes
Cast: Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Daniel Craig, Jude Law, Stanley Tucci, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tyler Hoechlin, Ciarán Hinds

Synopsis:

In the Winter of 1931 the son of a bagman for a regional crime boss loses his family and discovers the true nature of his father's work.

Review:

Based on a graphic novel, this nevertheless possesses more thoughtful performances than you might expect among the bravura visual flourishes (stylish killing in fedoras drenched by rain), and a clear theme of the difficulties between fathers and sons. Hanks is at his most understated and there is none of the hyperbole of, say, Miller's Crossing; the emphasis is on grimness. It is a shame that the ending fails to tie up certain loose ends: the Mob's apparent willingness to forget the stolen money, the house by the lake with a dog and no Aunt Sarah; and the return to the farmhouse is a move for which we have scarcely been prepared.
