Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 105m
Director: Rupert Wyatt
Cast: James Franco, Andy Serkis, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow

Synopsis:

A scientist developing a serum to reverse brain tissue loss in diseases such as Alzheimer's, accidentally triggers an evolutionary advance in the chimpanzee species.

Review:

Forget the time travel explanation of Escape from the Planet of the Apes, here is another time-honoured reason for Nature's imbalance: Man's meddling with science. As in Frankenstein: the True Story, it features a domestication of the scientist's 'creation' which ultimately goes violently wrong. The major leap forward is of course the motion capture technology permitting Andy Serkis to emote as a simian, and the results are pretty stupendous, with a climactic confrontation on the Golden Gate bridge that raises the bar somewhat. However, the characterisations are decidedly old hat and schematic, including an uncaring animal care worker, and a black 'suit' who undergoes a dramatically under-explained change of heart.
