Ride with the Devil (1999)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 138m
Director: Ang Lee
Cast: Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, Jewel, Jeffrey Wright, Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Synopsis:

Missouri near the Kansas border: two childhood friends enlist in the Bushwhackers and spend much of the Civil War fighting and avenging. The issues become clouded, however, not least by the presence among them of a negro friend.

Review:

One of the few films to tackle Bushwhackers and Jayhawkers, certainly to present them as anything but bands of cutthroats. This sensitive film attempts to explain, by artful suggestion, how in a civil war there are only losers, but does eventually return to the former view of its irregular fighters. It's violent, authentic-looking and orchestrates its large-scale scenes with impressive sweep, while digging deep into its characters in the quieter moments. Above all it is about the developing relationship between its protagonist and his negro companion, from contempt through mistrust to respect and ultimately love.
