Ride the High Country (1962)

£0.00

(Guns in the Afternoon)

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 94m
Director: Sam Peckinpah
Cast: Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea, Mariette Hartley, Edgar Buchanan

Synopsis:

A pair of grizzled old-timers sign on to transport gold down a mountain and come up against an inbred family of prospectors.

Review:

The most outwardly conventional Peckinpah work, and his first directorial outing, this fine Western rides high on the charisma of its stars and what they bring to their roles at the elegiac end of their careers. With hindsight, however, it can be seen to enshrine some enduring thematic concerns and acting partnerships, such as the repressive nature of religion and brutalizing effect of the patriarchal family unit. Steve and Gil are also direct counterparts to Deke Thornton and Pike Bishop in The Wild Bunch, a tension between self-respect and lawlessness that can only be resolved in death.
