Rich and Strange (1931)

(East of Shanghai)

Country: GB
Technical: bw 83m
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Cast: Henry Kendall, Joan Barry

Synopsis:

A bored metropolitan couple believe that an unexpected inheritance will bring glamour and excitement to their lives and embark on a cruise out East. Wealth, however, only helps them forget what held them together, and sea travel carries perils of its own.

Review:

A somewhat moralistic, and murder-free, Hitchcock, though there are one or two macabre touches and it is possible to discern the director's contempt for nouveau riche characters, visible in later films such as Rebecca.
