Restoration (1995)
Country: US
Technical: col 118m
Director: Michael Hoffman
Cast: Robert Downey Jnr, Sam Neill, David Thewlis, Polly Walker, Meg Ryan
Synopsis:
In the 1660s, a London physician cures the King's spaniel and finds himself catapulted first into a bogus marriage to the royal mistress, then into obscurity, where he rediscovers his gift and self-esteem.
Review:
The title of course refers to more than just the historical event and the colourful era it heralded. Ultimately, though, the film takes on too much, from Greenaway-inspired lunacy to more conventional travails based on the disasters of the times. The lightness of tone is entertaining, the acting good, but the final affirmation a shade unconvincing.
