(Stormy Waters)

Country: FR
Technical: bw 91m
Director: Jean Grémillon
Cast: Jean Gabin, Madeleine Renaud, Michèle Morgan

Synopsis:

A tugboat captain in Finistère indulges the jokes over his first mate's flighty wife, but is himself lured from his devoted wife by a woman he has rescued in high seas.

Review:

Gabin's second film with Grémillon exploits his bluff, kindhearted persona, nevertheless capable of truculence or cruelty when embattled by conflicting emotions. The temperamental sea is an apt metaphor, and the theme of infidelity is telegraphed early on at a wedding party. The standout scene is where Morgan and Gabin wander along the beach and visit an empty house: Prévert and Cayatte's dialogue subtly builds up to the emotional truth of their encounter, and the decor and camera movements are sublime. The war seems a long way away - for good reason: it was made in 1939. The film should be seen on a double bill with Quai des brumes.
