Red River (1948)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw 133m
Director: Howard Hawks
Cast: John Wayne, Montgomery Clift, Joanne Dru, Walter Brennan

Synopsis:

In the 1860s a self-made cattleman sets out with nearly ten thousand head from Texas to Missouri, with his adopted son and old-time companion. But his domineering ways prove too much for the men.

Review:

The archetypal cattle drive movie, full of sweeping vistas of livestock and cowmen set against big skies, vast plains and craggy hills, this is also a historic account of the forging of what would become known as the Chisholm Trail. It is an interesting mix of American gothic (Moby Dick) and Mutiny on the Bounty, in which the time of the self-made nation builder is seen to be eclipsed by a more humane and tolerant form of authority. For all these epic qualities - there are Indians and a railroad too - it contains Hawks's stock characters - the best friend, the independent, garrulous heroine, the old timer, and the Duke, always giving people orders - as well as his favoured themes: professionalism and self-reliance.
